Part 151: Episode 5, Final Day, Trial Former: Trip to Yesteryear

Music: Silence

We learned a lot about Goodman's murder in our investigation yesteray. I don't think any of it is going to matter much at first today, though. I don't know what to expect here, really.

(This is the Defendant's Lobby all right... but there's no defendant.)

Wait, do they let the defendants out of the detention center to just wander over to the courthouse on their own?

(And where's Ema, for that matter? It almost seems as if...)

Sound: Realization

Edgeworth!
Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture

Knowing you, you've already figured it out...

Has Edgeworth also figured it out?

Well... I have a pretty strong hunch.

Sound: Wipe

(Looks like I'm not the only one who's figured it out.)

You know, the only reason this trial didn't reach a verdict yesterday...
Sound: Realization

If that number does belong to whom you suspect, then no doubt will remain.

After all, he hasn't been officially charged with anything.

True... Not yet.
Sound: Realization

Is Phoenix's whole strategy to get Gant charged with evidence tampering to reveal his ID number? That's... actually not bad?

Five minutes, Wright, and Chief Prosecutor Skye will be found guilty.

But she didn't do it!
Sound: Whack

We've fairly well-proven that Goodman was killed in the evidence room, not the parking garage. And that it wasn't Lana's ID on the record accessing the evidence room. She's just about the only person that couldn't have killed Goodman, but she'll still be found guilty anyway if we can't nail the real killer.

Edgeworth seems to realize the whole setup today is ridiculous, too.

(This is the first time he's ever done something like this...)

Lana's hiding something, and the only way we'll ever know the truth...

is to draw it out of her.

The "truth"?
Sound: Realization

Everything goes back to the SL-9 Incident.

Sound: Whack

We don't have time to reminisce about the past!

That depends on you.

...!
Sound: Light Bulb

If she's found guilty, you'll lose your only chance to find out what really happened.

See you in court, Wright.

Edgeworth fades out...

(This is it.)

Music: Silence

(If I'm ever going to find out what Chief Gant has on her, it's now!)

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel

Music: Trial

The defense is ready, Your Honor.

The prosecution is ready, Your Honor.

?

But before that, the police chief has a proposal to make.

(Chief Gant...!)
Sound: Realization

This development seems unlikely to be good for us.

Sound: Whack
Sound: Clapping

No, I've been drowning enough as it is in my work.
Sound: Light Bulb

Ho! That's a good one! Don't think I can top that!
Sound: Whack
Sound: Clapping

Music: Silence

Lana... that is to say, the defendant,

Sound: Realization

Looks like just like last episode, we'll spend the last day of trial grilling our own client out of their confession.

(She wants to do what!?)

Sound: Light Bulb

Yeah I bet you do.

In the end, it should save everyone a lot of time and trouble.

Well, here we go.

Music: Trial

What's this all about, defendant?

Well then? What's your request?

Sound: Realization

Huh!?
Sound: Stab

I confess to all charges against me.

Sound: Guilty

While not ideal, that's the same story she's been telling since she was first arrested.

No,

Lana!
Sound: Stab 2

Music: Suspense

Sound: Gallery

Looks like we're already in the thick of it.

Sound: Gavel x 3

Sound: Desk Slam

You can't!

In that case, Mr. Wright,

...I really should have seen that coming. I'm not sure why she let us represent her in the first place, really.

But Lana!
Sound: Light Bulb

The prosecution may lack direct evidence against me,

I would like you to render your verdict now, if you please.

Hmm...

I'm pretty sure there are legal reasons to deny a sudden change in representation like this one, particularly if it's followed by a sudden confession without even a plea deal. It reeks of illegal pressuring.

Sound: Gavel

Music: Silence

even if Mr. Wright may feel otherwise.

(This can't be happening!)

I really thought we'd be having Lana testify her confession for us to cross-examine, but I guess not?

Sound: Shock 2 x 4

One moment, Your Honor.

Music: Suspense

M-Mr. Edgeworth!?

I would ask what that little detail has to do with anything all of the sudden, but Edgeworth seems to be on our side here so I'll just shut up.

Sound: Desk Slam

Any ruling at this stage would certainly be premature.
Sound: Drama Pound

Sound: Realization

I understand this is a difficult time for you,

Sound: Whack

Hmph.

Sound: Realization

There's an interesting dynamic here, if we assume that Edgeworth knows that Gant is the real killer at this point. Gant has been screwing with Edgeworth all episode, and now Edgeworth is finally going to fight back.

What?

Sorry, but I'm no longer the naive little "boy" you would have me be.

...

With this sudden confession from the defendant...

...

Hmph.

I thought so.

Really, Edgeworth was going to resign anyway, so what does he have to lose here?

Oh? To whom...?

Sound: Realization

All right, time to make a teenager relive her trauma! I wonder who Edgeworth's first witness was going to be initially?

I request the court hears her testimony!

Sound: Objection

Sound: Whack

Go away Lana, you're clearly compromised here.

I don't think we need to contin-

Sound: Realization

...!
Sound: Light Bulb

The exposure of truth sometimes results in tragedy...

However!

No matter how tragic the truth may be,

This is Edgeworth's world, we're all just living in it.

Sound: Gavel

Music: Silence

That's okay with you, right Chief Gant?

Now we have to take Gant down, for Edgeworth's sake. A cause I'm much more in alignment with.

Ms. Ema Skye. Please take the stand.

What an interesting phrase there. Usually it's "take the bull by the horns" here. I wonder if that one translated differently from Japanese?

Oh, right, witness testimony coming.

Music: Trial

Now then, witness. Please state your name and occupation.

Um... M-my name is Ema. Ema Skye.

Edgeworth finally gets a cooperative witness! Kind of; she still didn't really answer the question. Her occupation is "student".

Two years ago...

Is this correct?

Yes.

I'm sorry,

Edgeworth doesn't look very sorry.

Mr. Edgeworth. Please remember this trial concerns the murder of Detective Goodman.

Yes. It most certainly is.
Sound: Realization

...

...

W-well okay then!
Sound: Stab

(He sure gave in fast...)

Now...

...Did Edgeworth just bluff the judge there? Or has he put it all together himself?

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

I was waiting in my sister's office that day.

Neil Marshall rescued me,

but I'll never forget what I saw in that instant!
Sound: Whack

Sound: Wipe

Music: Silence

Well, I already know what to present for this one.

It's a good thing you weren't harmed.

I passed out...

I don't remember much.

What does this testimony have to do with Detective Goodman's murder?

...

Sound: Realization

(You've got to admire him for his courage, considering he has no evidence...)

Do we still have standing here? I thought we were fired. Oh well, might as well keep yelling and pointing at things until they kick us out!

Sound: Testimony 2

(Ema doesn't have any reason to lie...)

(but Lana sure does.)

I was waiting in my sister's office that day.

Yes. She was second in command under then Deputy Chief of Police Gant.

Yes, I remember.

I believe they shared the same office.

That's right.

I'd always sit at my sister's desk,

I wanted to play it that day, too...

Lana promised to take me to dinner after she finished her work.

A man came running in, and took me hostage.

A "man"...?

Yes, Joe Darke.

Sound: Wipe

Joe Darke was brought in for questioning on the day of that ceremony.

When he saw his chance...

he fled the room, right?

Upon fleeing the room, Darke proceeded to take the elevator.

So wait, he took the elevator to the top floor where Gant's office is? I thought earlier they said he ran straight from the questioning room to the office, which happened to be across from the elevator. Maybe Darke really was targeting Gant's office all along?

Then he ran into Skye and Gant's office.

There was a lot of noise coming from outside, so I...

Sound: Realization

Explains how Darke got access to an office that needs a detective's ID to open the door.

Neil Marshall rescued me,

What was the prosecutor doing there?

Deputy Chief Damon Gant, and Prosecutor Neil Marshall.

(Almost forgot about Gant...)

quote:

Original line: "(Gant was there too...?)" I guess the original script had forgotten that we'd already heard Gant was there once before?

I assume that would also be why he was the first to run after Darke.

And that's when Prosecutor Marshall came running in?

But...

but I'll never forget what I saw in that instant!

Can you tell us about that?

The lights?
Sound: Realization

It was just about this time of year...

So the electricity went out?

Wait a minute...

If it was pitch dark in that room...

Right, but just then lightning flashed again outside.

Just noticing that Ema's sprites are great for both investigation conversation and testifying.

I see...

I told the detective about what I saw then.

The detective?

Sound: Realization

Interesting one to prompt on. Let's keep going.

So you spoke with Detective Goodman about this... two years ago.

And you told Detective Goodman about what you saw?

Yes, but...

That's why I drew a picture.
Sound: Realization

(A picture... Yes, I think she mentioned that before.)

I'm surprised the picture is being brought up so soon. Onward!

This picture the witness drew...

I believe it has a very important meaning.

quote:

We can stop questioning Ema at either prompt, but since when has Phoenix displayed any empathy?

(Poor Ema. These memories are really torturing her. She's been through enough already.)

Thank you, Ema. You don't have to go into that.

Now then, please tell us.

This scene that imprinted an image in your mind...

Can you please describe it to us?

The man...

And yes, we get the same scene for backing off each time. We just get taken back to the cross, and Ema's last line of testimony.

Sound: Gavel

Y-yes, Your Honor.

New statement! It replaces the last one we just dealt with. We of course immediately press on it.

You drew a picture of the scene you witnessed, right?

I can still see it now... Whenever I close my eyes...

yet I never received any picture.
Sound: Realization

Perhaps the witness is mistaken?

(This picture that Ema drew... that reminds me!)

(I guess I should check the evidence again...)
Sound: Realization

Well anyway. Let's continue.

Now I'm confused. It seems we have two things to present here.

Can you please describe it to us?

The man...

The man raised up his knife, and... and stabbed Mr. Marshall in the chest...!

That must have been a real shock.

Tell us...

what were you doing at that moment?

When lightning struck and the lights went out,

Sound: Wipe

Hmm...

Hmm. That's the end of the pressing.

I see a couple of possibilities, amongst our vast horde of evidence. So what should we present here?
